Bobby tune: (i.e.: Cassidy / France)

Jerry tune: (i.e.: ?impossible? / Day Job

i always thought that Picasso Moon was pretty bad..."better than a drive in movie, oh wee" feckin' come on. did I really hear bobby sign that again and again...

i always kinda liked 'from the heart of me', but mostly for jerry's descending licks at the end.

worst jerry (nearly impossible, but I'll give it a shot): 'louie, louie' hands down.

right now, for me, the best is a '76 Crazy Fingers...yes!

I take back what I said about Easy Answers. Samba in the Rain is the worst Grateful Dead song ever, lyrically and musically. It sounds like a bad Tubes song and has to be Hunter's worst lyric. So buzz-shaving that a drug-addled Garcia abandoned trying to learn the changes during the instrumental break to play even an acceptable solo. Can you imagine being smacked out and hearing that thing start up?

Has anyone ever seen a good one? Money Money is Like a Rolling Stone compared to this song. Easy Answers is Strawberry Fields Forever. Wave to the Wind is Smells Like Teen Spirit. Sunrise is Stardust.

Don't like it.

you, sir, are right on the money. samba just had to be one of the member's idea of a bad joke. talk about a bathroom break song. a good version of that song is out of the mathematical range of infinite possibilities.

worst is easy answers

garcia--best is probably terrapin or reuben and cherise...lyrically, days between has some cool lyrics, as does china cat...the problem is that a bunch of jerry songs have been my "favorite" at one time or another...

I'll second 'France'
I never really dug 'Corrina'. I was there the first time 'Corinna' was played at the end of the first set and we all spent set break going "what the hell was that!?"
I really hated that "I Fought the Law" cover
best songs? Too many to list...

Oh Boy - I choose Wave to the Wind(for worst). Not just because it was "new". I saw them play it at least 2 times and it was just a lifeless song. The lyrics were ok, but the music had no form.

Best song is much ore difficult. It has to be a Jerry tune though.

I remember 'Wave to the Wind' being really different from the first times they played it. The first version plodded through a bunch of different changes and then the second version was more upbeat. I actually dug that song. "Childhoods End" was another late period Phil song that I enjoyed.

'93 Wave to the Winds are pretty good. '92's generally were a bit more rough. I liked the 2/22/93, the 3/11/93, and the consistently solid versions of Spring '93.

I can think of worst song the Dead played, but you can't say anything bad about those who have passed away. Therefore, I'll have to say it's possibly Corrina (although that could be good).

Best song? Depends on the tune and the era. Hard to say best from worst. No comment. Part of being a fan was getting over favorites and digging the developemental process of each song.

Many of the covers did not excel, but 'One More Saturday Night' always disappointed, at least in my circle tethered to the Bay Area.

That's right, why foist throwaways and end on a downer. I'd even rather hear 'U.S. Blues.'

I always disliked Easy To Love, Day Job, Mexicali Blues, Hell In A Bucket, Samba In the Rain.

I remember becoming very tired of seeing Black Peter from '79 to '83, when it seemed that it was played at half the shows I attended in that period, and I would cringe whenever the opening riffs were played.

Also I don't much like Throwing Stones. One reason is that I feel it changed NFA from one of the great long post drums jam tunes into the gimmicky, manipulative (crowd chanting, hand clapping... "Bop Bop Bop....Bop Bop") and much shorter show ending tune that it later became.

One of my fondest memories was at Cape Cod 10/27/79. After the encore, after the band had probably already left the building, a large part of the audience stayed behind for what seemed like 20 minutes, stomping our feet and slamming down the seats in a raucaus spontaneous NFA beat that shook mthe whole building.

As for favorite tunes, there are way to many to even begin to mention.

The worst one's I thought were no Dead songs but the over-played blues covers: Little Red Rooster, New Minglewood, etc.

In art there is really no such thing as bad or good - it is a matter of appropriateness.

The first time I heard Throwing Stones, Sante Fe 1982 it was like a vision. "Hell in the Bucket" is a killer rocker.

Even Day Job had it's place

"Daddy may drive a V-8 'Vette
Mamma may bathe in champagne yet"

I think i will agree and disagree with many of the choices that are posted here, and so no real need to comment. Except to say that sometimes a song, even one that you are really into, can rise above it's greatness and achieve a sort of immortality. For instance, i love 'Mountains Of The Moon,' but there is something about the 1969-04-05 version that sends a chill up my spine. Really, i can't get the thing out of my head. And i can say the same about several other Dead songs. There are a few Bird Songs which rise to brilliance ... can't think of any off the cuff, but you all know what i mean anyway. As for that brain-dead comment about the Grateful Dead being the worst band, well, i just read somthing like that and just pity the fool who will go through life wrapped in their little narrow way of thinking and seeing and experiencing the world. It's like back in high school when some dumbass would say something like "Shakespeare sucks," and you look at them and wonder if in fact they actually have the ability to feel. Oh well, life goes on.

Give them credit, Jefferson Airplane had a sense of humor to call their first anthology LP,
"THE WORST OF JEFFERSON AIRPLANE".

Ironically, of course, the Airplane had some really awful "songs" that were left off the "worst" collection... which would have been funny had a few been included to show they could laugh at themselves.

I think the Airplane were aware of their tendency to over indulge their creative egos, and that they really did have some of the "worst" drek in their repetoire especially on those later JA albums like Bark.

They could still be great live but when they played at odds with each other their sets were shrill, and stunk up the stage... PHEW!
Take a look at the Behind The Scenes meltdown with Grace almost inciting the entire audience to walkout at a concert in Germany - though the audience was initially leaving in droves, many decided to stay and watch the Starship crash and burn...

Is there a way to watch that whole debacle, taped for TV but never shown unedited?
